Max was incredibly excited. Summer holidays came to an end, and he couldn't wait to see his friends at school. Recently, his mom bought him a new pair of jeans and cool sneakers, which Max really wanted. He decided to wear them for the first day of school – just for good luck. He finished breakfast, grabbed his backpack, and ran out the door.

He could easily walk to school because it was not far away. Today, however, Max felt something was off. He quickly realized that his right foot was starting to hurt. "Oh, I see! A small pebble must have fallen inside my shoe!" – he thought to himself. He took off his sneaker to give it a little shake, but nothing fell out. "Huh, that's weird," Max whispered as he put the shoe back on and continued on his journey.

By the time he got to the front of the school, he had to sit down. Both of his feet were now aching. He couldn't bear it any longer, so he took them off only to reveal his right heel was bloody. "Oh no! My new shoes!" – he said out loud. As he was examining his feet, the school principal walked by. "Max, why are you sitting on the sidewalk?" – he asked just before noticing the boy's blood-stained socks. "Oh boy, those new shoes have to be giving you a rough time! It happens sometimes. Come with me. I have bandages in my office and some spare slippers. You can put them on so you don't hurt your feet anymore."

A couple of minutes later, Max was feeling much better. He was wearing comfortable sandals and had band-aids on his heels to prevent dirt and bacteria from getting into the wounds. He got to his classroom quickly, and just as he was greeting his old friends, the bell rang. First lesson – history!

"Welcome back, kids!" – the teacher exclaimed as she walked through the door. "This year, we're going to be learning a lot of important things. That's why I got you these new books. Please come and get them," she said and pointed towards her desk. Max grabbed his copy and went back to look at it. "Wow!" – he thought to himself as he was flipping through the pages and admiring the many photographs inside. "Are these pyramids? Who are those people in shiny armor? Is that – OUCH!” – he screamed. The teacher quickly ran to Max's desk. "Oh, Max! You have to be careful. These pages have pretty sharp edges since they're brand new," she said. But it was too late. Max's thumb was already turning red. The teacher opened one of the drawers of her desk and pulled out a paper tissue. "Here, Max, press it against your thumb to stop the bleeding. The cut looks fairly small, so it should be no problem," she smiled. "Now," she turned to the class. "Where were we?"

The history class was over soon, and Max was feeling a lot better. He wasn’t aching anymore, so he was ready to have some fun with his friends. The classroom door opened, and kids ran towards the schoolyard to catch up and play some games.

Max was just about to join them when he walked out the door and – WHAM! A ball hit him directly in the face. "I am so sorry!" – a kid screamed, running towards Max to see if he's okay. "I wanted to throw the ball to my friend who was standing over there," she mumbled, pointing towards the exit. "Oh no, your nose is bleeding! Sit down, bend over a little bit, and hold it just below the nasal bone," the girl suggested. "The what-bone?" Max muttered. His nose was hurting bad, but the bleeding stopped soon enough. "What's with all this noise here?" – the principal yelled as he was running down the hall. "Max, is that you again?" – he asked as he looked the boy up and down. "Look, I think you're having a really bad day. Why don't you go home and rest for a bit, okay? I will call your mom to pick you up." Max nodded.

When Max's mom arrived and saw her son, she gasped. "What happened to you?" – she asked him as he was getting into the car with his blood-stained jeans and shoes in his hand. Max looked at her and said, "Mom, I don't think these clothes are lucky. Not at all!”
